Ipswich (OE Gip's harbour or trading centre) is the county town of Suffolk, in East Anglia, eastern England, located where the River Gipping meets the estuary of the River Orwell. The 2014 population was 133,400 and climbing.
Probably founded in the early 7th century, throughout the Middle Ages and into the early modern era it was a busy port serving the East Anglian wool and leather trades to north western Europe. After a pause in prosperity it picked up in the 19th century and once more thrives as a mercantile and yachting centre.
