Jaina. On the coast of the sate of Campeche, Mexico, to about 32 km. from the city of Campeche, is the island of Jaina. This island was a Mayan cemetery and has more than 20,000 tombs of which over 1,000 have been archaeologically excavated. In local museums are exhibited found figures of ceramics (figurines) in the pots where the Mayans buried to their dead. Jaina-style figurines are delicately detailed.
The Maya name Jaina means: "House of water".
