Jyutping

From Conservapedia - Reading time: 1 min

Jyutping (Simplified: 粤拼; Traditional: 粵拼) is a romanization system for Standard Cantonese developed in 1993. Formally, it is the Linguistic Society of Hong Kong Cantonese Romanization Scheme. The LSHK promotes the use of this romanization system.

Compared to Standard Cantonese Pinyin, Jyutping:

  • Renders the vowel sounds oe and y differently
  • Remders the sounds dz and ts differently
  • Uses a different system for tones

Jyutping also refers to a system for entering Chinese characters into a computer. It is based on pronunciation, much like the pinyin method.
