A lake is a body of water surrounded entirely by land. The Caspian Sea, a saltwater lake, is the largest lake in the world (the Mediterranean Sea is larger but connected to the Atlantic Ocean). Lake Superior, one of the Great Lakes, is the largest freshwater lake by area. Lake Baikal in Siberia is the world's deepest lake, and the largest freshwater lake by volume.
