Lancaster is a town in central Pennsylvania, best known for being the center of a large Amish community.

Among the colleges in Lancaster are Franklin and Marshall College and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.

Interestingly, during the American Revolutionary War Lancaster served as a temporary capital of the United States (for one day, September 27, 1777, when Philadelphia fell to the British). The only order of business by the Continental Congress was to elect Benjamin Franklin to negotiate a treaty with France; the Congress determined that Lancaster was too vulnerable to serve as a capital (being only 60 miles away) whereupon they relocated to York (some 20 miles further away).
