Latinx (officially pronounced "la-tinks", but often pronounced literally as "Latin-X") is a highly controversial, politically correct substitute for "Latino", in order to make it gender neutral, and to accommodate for the non-binary Latin community.

Increasingly the liberal media refer to the "Latinx community" rather than the more familiar "Latino community." The vast majority of Latinos do not even understand or use the term in their daily lives, and are often vehemently against it. It's often compared to colonialism, where an outside entity claims their own language and culture is "problematic" and thus needs to be changed by the "benevolent" outsiders. The irony of this, coming from the same people who claim to be anticolonialism isn't lost on them, either.

A variation called Filipinx ("fili-pinks" or "Filipin-X") has also been used to describe the Filipino community, which uses similar gendered language (owing to also having a history of Spanish colonialism). Likewise, this term is met with widespread ridicule by Filipinos for the same reasons.
