Lelystad

Lelystad is the capital of the Dutch province of Flevoland; established in 1967, it is built on polder land (reclaimed land) in the centre of what, until the mid twentieth century, had been the former Zuiderzee and was subsequently the IJsselmeer lake. The town is named after Cornelis Lely, who designed the Afsluitdijk, 'closure dyke', the separation barrier which on completion in 1933 divided the Zuiderzee from the North Sea and made land reclamation possible.^[1]

The population of Lelystad is 76,796 (2016); the city lies 5m below sea level.
