Lucas is a coming of age movie seen exclusively from the viewpoint of teenagers and their social group; adults are ineffectual as leaders, being merely sources of embarrassment or at best convenient helpers.

The title character is an "accelerated" 14-year-old who hangs out on the outskirts of his high school's social life, giving the excuse that he finds athletics and such to be superficial while being in denial about his social isolation. He shows new girl Maggie (16) a mansion and tell her that he lives in it, that he's "helping the gardener" with mowing the lawn. But actually he's desperate for a friend, and he doesn't realize that monopolizing Maggie is not a stable situation.
