Madison County, Illinois is named after James Madison and is the most populated county in southern Illinois. With a declining population of about 265,000 (as of 2022), it is ranked 8th among all the counties in Illinois.

Its largest number of school districts (13) is in Alton.

Many of the residents of Madison County commute across the Mississippi River to Missouri for jobs.

Politics[edit]

The county began shifting Republican in 2012, and by 2020 Donald Trump carried the county by 55-42%. In 2022, the county voted for the Republican candidate for governor, even he lost statewide by a large margin.
