A mayor is an elected individual who is in charge of the day-to-day operations of a town or city. A mayor typically works closely with a city council to help craft city laws, ordinances, and to promote the economy of the city.

In some countries, notably those of the British Commonwealth, the Mayor of some major cities is known as a Lord Mayor.
