The Metropolitan Police (known as 'the Met') is the main police service for London. It was founded in 1829 by the then Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel and was the first modern police force in the United Kingdom. Its headquarters are at New Scotland Yard.
The Metropolitan Police is the police service for Greater London, with the exception of the minuscule City of London district which has its own force. In addition, smaller forces such as the British Transport Police, the Ministry of Defence Police, and the Royal Parks Police operate in the capital.
