Midwestern austerity is a common perspective in the Midwest which is evident in its politically conservative approach and even its art, as depicted in the American Gothic.

President Gerald Ford, from Michigan, summed it up this way as explained in the Daily Beast, in recounting what John and Karen Hess wrote in their The Taste of America (1977):^[1]

[He] regarded both eating and sleeping as “a waste of time.” Calling attention to what he regarded as his virtuous Midwestern austerity, the president boasted of his unvarying lunch of cottage cheese with a sliced onion or quartered tomato, sprinkled with A.1.
