The Minnesota Supreme Court consists of seven Justices who are elected for six-year terms, or (more often) appointed to fill a vacancy that arises during a six-year term. When a Justice chooses to run for reelection, no incumbent has been defeated in 50 years.^[1]

The Minnesota Supreme Court considers about 900 petitions for review each year, and agrees to hear only about 1 in 8 of the cases for which review is petitioned. Review is mandatory for election disputes and first-degree murder cases. Appeals are typically from the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

Retirement at age 70 is mandatory for each Justice, in contrast with federal courts, which lack any mandatory retirement age.

The Minnesota Supreme Court televises its oral arguments and broadcasts them over the internet.
