The Most Valuable Player (MVP) distinction is one that exists across most professional sports and is generally given at the end of the season to the best-achieving player in the league. In the National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, and National Football League, the award retains the name, MVP. However, in the National Hockey League, the Most Valuable Player award is called the Hart Memorial Trophy.[1]
Typically, most professional leagues have two separate MVP awards each year: One for the regular season, and one for the playoffs.
The minor controversy that usually arises from the award, is in regards to its ambiguous definition.[2] Some argue it should go to the player who has performed the best, while others contend that the success of one's team should play a critical role in determining whether a player is truly the "most valuable".
