Naples (Napoli in Italian) is the largest city in southern Italy, with a population of around 1 million people and it's the capital of the region of Campania.

It's the third largest city in Italy after Rome and Milan and its metropolitan area is one of the largest in Europe.

It is situated near the Vesuvius, the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and the Palace of Caserta.

The historic city centre of Naples is the largest in Europe.

The port of Naples is one of the most important in Europe.

It was founded as Neapolis (or new city) by the Greeks in the 7th century BC and it's one of the oldest cities in the world. It was among the main cities of Magna Graecia. Later Naples became part of the Roman Republic.

When Roman Empire fell, Naples was conquered by Byzantines. Later Naples became the capital city of the Kingdom of Naples from 1282 until 1816, when it became the capital of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies.

The city is very famous for pizza and mandolin. Symbols of Naples are St. Januarius, Pulcinella and the siren Parthenope.

The soccer team of the city is SSC Napoli.
