The New York Yankees are a Major League Baseball team located in the Bronx borough of New York City, New York. They play in the American League, East Division.
The Yankees are considered to be one of the most successful teams in baseball history because they have won 27 championships.[1]
The Yankees are also one of the wealthiest teams in all of baseball,[2] a fact that detractors have criticized and fans have lauded. Their payroll has been the league's highest for many years. As of 2008, they have handed out four of the five largest contracts in MLB history. However, it should be noted that this is just indicative of the Yankees adhering to conservative, capitalistic principles. This is evidenced by the fact that the owners of the Yankees, the Steinbrenner family, are prominent conservatives. George Steinbrenner, the teams principle owner up until his passing in 2010, was a major contributoer to President Nixon's campaigns, and was pardoned by Ronald Reagan. They are also known for their policy that no player is allowed to have facial hair (though they occasionally have made exceptions for moustaches, where a player was noted for such); no other team has such a policy.

Boston Red Sox[edit]
For over 100 years there has been a heated rivalry with the Yankees and the Red Sox. It is believed to have started when; Red Sox owner Harry Frazee not sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1919. [3]
New York Mets[edit]
The Yankees also have a rivalry with cross-town rival the Mets. The two faced off each other in the 2000 World Series in which the Yankees had won. Most Yankee fans are also fans of the Giants and Rangers, as those teams previously played in Manhattan, while Met Fans are mostly fans of the Jets and Islanders as both teams originally played on Long Island. Studies have also shown that most Yankee fans are Republicans and most Met Fans are Democrats. [4]
