Nizhny Novgorod (Russian:Нижний Новгород) is the capital city of the Russian federal subject of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, having a population of 1,250,619 inhabitants as of the 2010 Census.
It was established in 1221 by Yuri II of Vladimir.
The city was named Gorky between 1932 and 1990 in relation to the socialist Maxim Gorky.
The main center of the city is the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin and is situated on the Volga River.
