Nupedia was an English language encyclopedia web project founded by atheist libertarian objectivist Jimmy Wales and atheist philosophy professor Larry Sanger. It was underwritten through pornography-hosting Bomis. It is the predecessor to Wikipedia. Nupedia lasted from March 2000 until September 2003. Unlike Wikipedia, it was not a wiki and had a seven-step process to approval. Articles went through an extensive peer review process. Before it ceased operating, Nupedia produced twenty-four peer approved articles, and 74 more articles were in progress of approval. In 2001, Wikipedia was founded to allow collaboration in articles before they went through peer review, but Wikipedia overtook Nupedia and Wikipedia became the largest encyclopedia project.
