Plantagenet refers to that dynasty of the Kings of England that ruled from the accession of Henry II in 1154 to the death of Richard III in 1485. The name was coined in the 15th century. It began as a nickname for Henry’s father, Geoffrey the Fair (1113-1151), Count of Anjou who is reputed to have worn a sprig of broom (“genet”) in his hat. The dynasty is also referred to as Angevan from the city of Angers, Geoffrey’s capital in Anjou.
