PrP^res, also known as PrPSc, is a prion isoform of PrP, or PrPc. It is the sole cause of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy. The name comes from 'prion protein resistant', meaning it is resistant to proteinase K. PrPres is able to convert healthy PrPc into copies of itself. These prions are neurotoxic.
