Race and intelligence were believed to be related in the pre-scientific era of psychology that was marred by racism in general and Eugenics in particular. It was only in the 1960s and 1980s that scientists began to separate out cultural artifacts, positing that intelligence was, if not wholly environmental, nonetheless not tied to race. Factors causing differences in academic achievement and IQ scores were found to be mostly cultural, although there are still various people in the fields of psychometrics and biology who defend some level of hereditary difference in intelligence between racial-ethnic categories.
