The Red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a well-known Buteo hawk of the family Accipitridae. It is one of the most common hawks in North America, being found from Southern Canada throughout all of the lower 48 United States, as well as in Mexico and Central America and the Caribbean islands.
The red-tailed hawk usually preys on small mammals like rodents, including squirrels and chipmunks, as well as pests like rats and mice.
