Rhode Island School of Design, colloquially referred to as RISD (riz-dee), is one of the nation's most selective fine arts and design colleges. Founded in 1877 in Providence, Rhode Island, it today consists of a student body of 1800 undergraduate and 250 graduate degree candidates, as well as offering a variety of non-credit classes for children and adults. RISD students are known for their optimistic can-do attitude and desire to return to a more conventional social structure through appropriate, reassuring design, architecture and works of art. Due to its prohibitive tuition costs, a majority of the student body come from affluent families, and fortunately choose to not continue working as artists or designers upon leaving the institution. RISD students are always eager to explore the city of Providence and have new experiences within the greater community.

Disciplines offered as majors at RISD include:

  • Painting
  • Illustration
  • Sculpture
  • Printmaking
  • Ceramics
  • Textiles
  • Graphic Design
  • Film/Animation/Video
  • Transdimensional Media
  • Digital Media
  • Architecture
  • Furniture Design
  • Jewelry and Metalsmithing
  • Industrial Design
  • Apparel Design
