Sambo (самбо), also written as Sombo or sometimes written in all-caps, is a modern Russian martial art developed in the Soviet Union. It derives from Judo, traditional Russian folk wrestling, and Mongolian wrestling.
The word самбо (Sambo) is an acronym of the Russian phrase САМозащита Без Оружия (SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya), literally meaning "self-defense without a weapon."
