Contemporary accounts portray science as having been hindered by the church, generally on the grounds that the church is so dogmatic that it will do anything in its power to crush objective studies that might undermine its teachings. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even since medieval times, Catholic priests have made many important and enduring scientific contributions.

• Our modern view of the relationship between the church and science, which assumes the church is supposed to be in conflict with science, is also a holdover from the same Victorian age.^[1]
