Scranton is a city in Pennsylvania, part of the larger metropolitan area of Scranton–Wilkes-Barre–Hazleton. It was once a major center of the anthracite mining and textile industries and was the first U.S. city with an electrified streetcar system. The nickname is "The Electric City". Once a major U.S. city, Scranton's population peaked in the 1930 census and has been falling since. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 76,415. Anthracite mining ceased in the city after the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster. The TV series The Office is set in Scranton.
