Secretary of State is an official in the state governments of 47 of the 50 states in the United States. The other 3 states (Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia) have a Secretary of the Commonwealth.
Most commonly the Secretary of State is the state's chief elections official. They are responsible for overseeing all aspects of state elections, from finances to procedures. The Secretary of State is also usually in the line of succession to the governor.
