A simple random sample (sometimes SRS, oftentimes random sample) is a method of taking a sample from the target population with completely randomized selection in order to minimize bias. More complex versions of the simple random sample include stratified random sampling and introducing block design to an experiment.

A school inspector wants to learn how many students like pizza lunches. The inspector decides to take a sample of the 2400 students, and wants a sample size of 200. How should she choose the sample?

She should alphabetize the students, then label the students 0001-2400. Then, she will use a random number generator or a random digit sheet to select students, skipping repeat numbers and skipping numbers over 2400.
