Simplified Chinese is a simplification of Chinese characters that was adopted as the official orthography of the People's Republic of China in 1949. It is also used in Singapore. Traditional Chinese characters remain in use in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Malaysia. The characters were simplified in may ways, including using commonly used abbreviations, retaining only part of a traditional character, replacing the phonetic element with a simpler one, and replacing several traditional characters with one simplified character.^[1]
