Tarawa is the capitol city of Kiribati. As of 2012 the population is 40'311 people. It has the only airport servicing Kiribati, bonriki international. The parliament is located at Tarawa as well. The City is linked by several causeways from islet to islet, to create one long island on the south of the Tarawa atoll. Tarawa is the largest atoll in Kiribati, and at the highest point, rises 3 meters above sea level.

Tarawa is a conglomerate of several municipalities. The population is very homogeneous, few variations exist from municipality to municipality.
