Tbilisi is the capital and by far the biggest city of the Republic of Georgia situated on the banks of the Kura River. Founded in the 5th century AD, modern Tbilisi has a population of more than one million inhabitants.[1]

History[edit]

In 1989, after Soviet troops moved into Tbilisi to crack down on protests and killed at least 20 people,[2] Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to preserve communism in what was then an slaved Republic of the Soviet Union.
