Topeka, the capital city of Kansas, is located in the northeastern part of the state in Shawnee County. As of 2005, its population has been estimated to be about 12,000.[1]
The city is home to Washburn University and the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site. It is also the home of the Westboro Baptist Church, the notorious "church" known for protesting funerals of deceased military members.
The city's name comes from an American Indian word meaning "good place to grow potatoes".[2]
