Trope

From Conservapedia - Reading time: 1 min

A trope is a figure of speech in which words are used in a sense other than the literal. It extends the meaning of the words by making a comparison to other words, things, or ideas. Simile and metaphor are two common types of trope. For example, the phrase "the heart of the matter" expands the literal meaning of "heart" as a bodily organ, to meaning something at the center and of vital importance.
