Turbo Pascal was the first popular implementation of the Pascal programming language. It was written by Anders Hejlsberg and sold by Borland. Turbo Pascal was an integrated editor and compiler for PCs with MS DOS. The Pascal language was extended slightly, including better support for strings, which had a maximum size of 255 bytes. Turbo Pascal was so named because of its very fast compilation speed. It was also a compact program with the initial versions being a single COM file. At the end of the product life cycle, Turbo Pascal also ran on Microsoft Windows and could compile Windows programs.

In Version 5.5, support for Object Oriented programming was added.
