Turnpike

From Conservapedia - Reading time: 1 min

A turnpike is a main road paved with a smooth, crowned surface typically of high quality to enable vehicles to travel at higher speeds. A turnpike typically charges tolls to the travelers, and these are collected either electronically, or in person at toll booths or plazas.

The first turnpike in the United States was the Pennsylvania Turnpike, opened in 1940, before the Interstate Highways were opened.
