A monument to the Captive Nations stands at the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation in Washington, D.C.

The Victims of Communism Memorial is a memorial to those who were victimized by Communism since the establishment of that ideology. It was dedicated by President George W. Bush on June 12, 2007. The dedication ceremony featured the unveiling of the "Goddess of Democracy," a bronze replica of the statue erected by Chinese students in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China in the spring of 1989. Many world leaders have already visited the memorial site to pay their respects and lay commemorative wreaths. The Memorial is located at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and New Jersey Avenue, NW on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, a non-profit educational group dedicated to informing the public about the deaths and damage caused by Communism over time, was named after the memorial.

CCP global pandemic[edit]

In April 2020, the Foundation announced it would be adding the worldwide death toll from the CCP coronavirus to its accounting of deaths caused by Communism.[1] In a statement the Foundation announced:

The denial of information, outright fabrications, and disregard for human life—both within and outside of China’s borders—is so shocking and pervasive that the contracting of the virus by millions worldwide and the resultant death toll was not only foreseeable but entirely avoidable.

If the Chinese Communist Party had taken early steps to warn the world instead of covering up its spread, and if the WHO had simply questioned or cautioned against China’s assertions, the harm would have been significantly reduced. Instead, the PRC’s actions and WHO’s inaction precipitated a pandemic, leading to a global economic crisis and a growing loss of human life.

As a matter of justice, and to prevent future pandemics, the PRC must be held accountable through demands for economic reparations and other sanctions pertaining to human rights. China should also be suspended from full membership in the WHO and the WHO, which U.S. taxpayers fund annually, must be subject to immediate investigation and reform. Media organizations reporting on the claims of China and WHO regarding the pandemic without scrutiny or context must be cautioned against misleading the public.

Vandalism of Memorials[edit]

In June 2020, the Victims of Communism Memorial in Washington, D.C. was vandalized by leftist punks,[2], followed in July 2020 by a Victims of Communism Memorial construction site in Ottawa, Ontario being vandalized with spray paint graffiti by other leftist punks,[3] who falsely claimed that "Communism will win", despite history illustrating that Communist regimes, despite seizing power through deceit and violence and maintaining it through brutal and oppressive means (including genocide), have always failed and ultimately fell (most notably the USSR and Romania under Nicolae Ceausescu) when its citizens finally had enough of being subjected to abuse and corruption by Communist elitist rulers and rose up against the regimes and overthrew them in favor of returns to democracy and capitalism. Commenting on the vandalism at the memorial in Washington, Victims of Communism Memorial director Marion Smith said that the vandals who targeted the memorial, who have shown themselves not to take the amount and level of damage Communism has done throughout history seriously, display ignorance of world history:

For those who pretend socialism and fascism are all somehow on opposite ends of the political spectrum, fascism and socialism are twin ideologues, and that was very vividly on display with the Nazi-Soviet compact that started WWII... That's really a shame. Millennials and members of the Gen Z generation do not have a good understanding of the history of fascism or communism, and that leads them to be much more extremist in their perspective.[2]
