A Violet is a leafy-stemmed, low growing, herbaceous plant of the genus Viola. It has short-spurred, irregular flowers that are typically a purplish-blue (violet) color, but they can also have purple, blue, yellow, white, or variegated flowers. The flowers have a sweet fragrance. They are easy to grow,and flower best when given sunlight in the spring, and shade in the summer. There are many varieties of Violets.^[1] The Violet is the state flower of Illinois, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.^[2]
