Weber State University (WSU) (pronounced Wee-ber) is a public university located in Ogden, Utah. It has campuses in Ogden and in Davis County, Utah.

History[edit]

WSU was founded as Weber Stake Academy in 1889. The academy was named for its county in Utah. Weber County was named after John Henry Weber, an early American fur trapper. The school changed its name several times: Weber Academy in 1902, Weber Normal college in 1918, and Weber College in 1922. In 1933, the LDS Church transferred the institution to the State of Utah.[2] It became a state-supported junior college. In 1951, the college moved from its downtown campus to the present site on the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains.

Weber State College awarded its first baccalaureate degree in 1964. In 1991, the college became Weber State University, but it continues to offer 2-year degrees.[3]
