Strix is a genus of the family Strigidae, consisting of eighteen species of medium to large owls, and commonly known as earless or wood owls.

Strix has its origins from the Latin striga, meaning "to furrow" or "to strike",^[1] and was first used as a genus name for earless owls by Carl Linnaeus in 1758.
