Tangency

From Encyclopedia of Mathematics - Reading time: 1 min

The geometric notion meaning that at some point two curves (or a curve and a surface) have a common tangent line, or that two surfaces have a common tangent plane. The order of tangency is a characteristic of the nearness of the two curves (of the curve and the surface, of the two surfaces) in a neighbourhood of their common point. See Osculation.
