C2Call /ˈsiːtuːkaʊl/ GmbH is a German startup that provides an array of web calling applications and offers a browser-based, Java[2] VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) solution. [3] C2Call extends the possibilities of connectivity apps for smartphones, internet browsers, and SIP clients.[4]
C2Call was founded in 2008 by Martin Feuerhahn (CEO) and Michael Knecht (CTO).[5] Prior to establishing C2Call, Feuerhahn and Knecht had founded Actai in 2004.[6] The purpose of Actai was to develop mobile content solutions[buzzword] for mobile network operators and internet media companies.[7] Actai's customers included Aldi Talk and Freenet AG.[citation needed]
In May 2008, the duo spun off C2Call to incorporate C2Call GmbH in Werl, transferring all related IPs to C2Call GmbH to prepare it for external funding and international expansion.[citation needed]
In February 2009, C2Call introduced FriendCaller[8] into the digital communications marketplace, raising more than $2 million in funding by early 2010 in support of the launch.[9]
C2Call works on the principle of Java applet temporarily loading a Java widget into browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Safari, Chrome, and others that support JavaScript.[10] The widget adds VoIP functions to the web page[11] and is compatible with leading operating systems like Windows, Linux, and Mac OS.
Unlike other VoIP-based telephony services, there is no software to download, install, and configure.[12] The browser-based internet phone FriendCaller WebPhone[13] lets users make group video calls without having the need for any software installation.[14] C2Call is a venture-backed company that has generated more than $2 million in revenue since April 2010.[15]
