Disney Streaming Services LLC is a direct-to-consumer streaming service company owned by The Walt Disney Company through its Direct-to-Consumer and International division. The service was announced in August 2017, and is scheduled to begin operations in 2019 using BAMTech technology.[1]

History

In July 2016, The Walt Disney Company acquired a one-third stake in BAMTech for $1 billion, with an option to acquire a majority stake.[2] On August 8, 2017, Disney announced an increase in its ownership of the company to a 75% controlling stake for $1.58 billion with its plans to launch a branded direct to consumer streaming service based on technology from BAMTech after Disney ends a distribution agreement deal with Netflix in 2019.[3][4] BAMTech named Kevin Swint as senior vice president and general manager of the Disney forthcoming streaming service in January 2018 with Agnes Chu as programming executive.[5]

On March 14, 2018, Disney Streaming Services LLC was transferred, along with BAMTech and ESPN+, into the newly formed Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer and International segment.[6][7] On March 22, 2018, Disney Streaming Services LLC was formed.[8] On June 28, 2018, it was reported that Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures marketing president Ricky Strauss had been transferred to president of content and marketing for the Disney streaming service over senior vice president of content Agnes Chu.[9]

Content

It is expected that the service will have approximately 7000 episodes of television and 500 movies.[10] It will have no R-rated films, which will go to Hulu,[11] of which Disney owns 30% and, through the proposed acquisition of 21st Century Fox announced in December 2017 if it closes, an additional 30%.[12] The service's initial original content goal was planned to include four to five original movies and five television shows with budgets from $25–100 million.[11] In August 2018, it was reported that the planned Star Wars live-action series will cost $100 million.[13]

Disney Streaming Services will not hold rights to the first six films of the Star Wars film franchise, as U.S. streaming rights are held by Turner Broadcasting System through 2024.[14] Captain Marvel will be the first film distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures to not stream on Netflix.[15]
