Cladding

From HandWiki - Reading time: 1 min

Cladding is the outer layer of a scintillator, which should ensure minimum light loss. Cladding of a scintillating fibre is usually made of thin, non-scintillating material with an index of refraction clearly higher than that of the (scintillating) core, to ensure total refraction and few light losses between the passage of the particle and the photomultiplier. For detailed discussion, see Kazovsky96.
