Questioning Meditation is a type of meditation focused on the practice of inquiry. A Korean monk named Dowon (1973~ ) created this term in 2015. The method is inspired by the idea that when people are curious about something, they can better concentrate without distracting thoughts.
The purpose of this meditation is attaining Enlightenment. Enlightenment does not have to be a special milestone, but rather a state of being in which one can get to know that which wasn't known before. The bigger a question is, the bigger the enlightenment. One can experience some enlightened periods in life, but most are not so powerful as to solve fundamental questions of life. If one raises fundamental questions and struggles with them until solved, profound enlightenment may be reached. Through the ultimate enlightenment, one can be free from all suffering and attain true eternal happiness.
The most common question in this meditation practice is, "What is my true self before I was born?" This question is so profound and fundamental that once the question is answered, the ultimate enlightenment can be reached. In questioning meditation, the most important aspect is the confirmation process when an answer is found. One may not be able to identify if the answer is right or wrong. In turn, examination of the answer with an enlightened teacher is essential.
