It's not just fear, but also hatred of people who, with consent, do certain things with other certain people. Deals with people who are obsessed about some nonspecific gay agenda. When someone, especially in the U.S., declares to be a social conservative or there is an organization that has "family" in its name, you can bet these are homophobes. Luckily, this sort of position is getting more and more politically untenable in the United States and in west Europe, though we still have a lot of work to do combating homophobia in other places.
