Purity culture

Purity culture refers to the ways societies idolize virginity, sometimes at the expense of people's lives. It often represents a very chauvinistic and self-centered attitude in men who insist on only romantically or sexually associating with women who are virgins, especially since they often dehumanize single women who are not virgins. It often intersects with rape culture. It may also refer to the promotion of sex-negativity, such as religious prohibitions on premarital sex, or in some extreme cases, masturbation or even thinking about sex. It is often a source of arrogance for religious fundamentalists who idolize their own "purity".
