John Scotus Eriugena (c. AD 810 - c. 877) was an Irish philosopher and theologian. He was the first major speculative thinker of the Middle Ages and crafted a complex theological and philosophical system which is notoriously difficult to exegete. John Scotus was perhaps best known for attempting to reconcile neo-Platonism with Christianity but in the process, however, he seemed to stray from orthodox belief to a sort of pantheism.

John Scotus Eriugena was also very learned in the Greek language, an unusual occurrence in his time.^[1]

John Duns Scotus was a different philosopher who was from Scotland and lived centuries later.
