Tynemouth is a town in the district of North Tyneside in the Tyneside conurbation in north-east England; as its name suggests, it is situated at the point where the River Tyne enters the North Sea. Tynemouth itself is a pleasant resort town with many nineteenth century terraces and mansions overlooking the sea. It boasts the impressive ruins of a medieval castle and priory overlooking the mouth of the river, and a large monument to Cuthbert, Lord Collingwood, Nelson's second-in-command at the Battle of Trafalgar and the officer who both opened the fighting and secured the victory at that battle.

Prior to 1974 Tynemouth was a large county borough which also included the shipbuilding and fishing port of North Shields.
