    Overview[edit | edit source]

Linitis plastica is a subtype of gastric cancer. Stomach cancer is classified by the microscopic aspect using Lauren's criteria into intestinal type and diffuse type adenocarcinoma. Another form of classification, known as Bormann classification uses the gross aspect of the tumor for classification. Linitis plastica is often categorized as a Bormann type 4 tumor, however, this classification does not account for meandering hypertrophic mucosal folds and the tumors are usually localized. Therefore, Lauren's classification will be demonstrated here.

    Classification[edit | edit source]

    • Stomach adenocarcinoma may be classified by Lauren's criteria into 4 groups:[1]
      • Intestinal type
      • Diffuse type (linitis plastica)
      • Mixed
      • Indeterminate types
