James D Robinson IV (born June 13, 1962) is an American venture capitalist and entrepreneur[1], notably recognized as the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of RRE Ventures, a prominent venture capital firm in New York City. Robinson’s direct investments include impactful contributions to companies like Bolt,  BroadSoft[2], CAMP, DCG, HYPR, iCrossing, K2, Kik, KindBody, Kroll Bond Ratings, Ladder, Latch, Makerbot, Metapath, Noom, Olo, Orchestria, Paxos, Quirky, Red Brick Systems, RevolutionMoney, Ripple, Rubric, Spring Health, SmartPay, Taqua, Telocity, TheSkimm, Vastera, Vocera, Venmo, Wedding Channel, and Wisdom Tree Investments[2][1][2][3]

Early life and education[edit]

Robinson was born on June 13, 1962, in New York City. He was born into a family deeply rooted in the business world,as the son of James D. Robinson III, the former CEO of American Express.[1][2][3] His early experiences played a significant role in shaping his perspective and laying the foundation for his future endeavors in the world of business. His early education took place in New York, where he attended high school. In his late teens, Robinson drove Taxi in New York City. [2][4]

In 1986, James graduated with a degree in Business Administration and Computer Science from Antioch College. He later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1992.[2][4][3]

Career[edit]

Robinson's career includes positions at Hambrecht & Quist, JPMorgan & Co., and General Electric. In 1994, he co-founded RRE Ventures (formerly Sunset Partners) with Stuart J. Ellman, a Harvard Business School classmate. James D. Robinson III, his father, joined the venture full-time in 1996. [4][3]

Political involvement[edit]

Robinson has held positions at the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority and served in the Washington D.C. office during the 1984 Reagan-Bush Campaign as a press coordinator. In 2023 Robinson joined the Forward Party, founded by Andrew Yang and Governor Christie Todd Whitman. He has historically identified as an Independent. [5]

Robinson is married to Katie Jacobs, the daughter of Jeremy Jacobs. Together, they are parents to four children, and have many rescue dogs. [6]
